Festival of India in Oman



The first ‘Festival of India in Oman’ is being organized during November 2016- March 2017 by the Embassy of India in Muscat with the support of Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The Festival comprises Indian Classical and Folk dances, Indian instrumental Music, an Exhibition of Indian calligraphy, an Indian Food Festival and a Fashion Show. The Festival is being organized with a view to present to the people of Oman glimpses of the diverse Indian Culture, representing various traditions of Indian cultural heritage. The cultural Events under the Festival are being held in Muscat and three other major cities of Oman i.e. Salalah, Sur and Sohar.

H.E Yousuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah, Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs of Oman, inaugurated the first ever ‘Festival of India in Oman’ in a ceremony organized by the Embassy of India in Muscat on 15 November at Al-Bustan Palace Amphitheatre. H.E. Abdulaziz bin Mohammed al-Rowas, Advisor to His Majesty for Cultural Affairs, was also present. Senior Officials of the Government of Oman, Ambassadors, members of Diplomatic Corps, prominent Omani businessmen, prominent Indians in Oman, persons from the field of art and culture and media persons were also present at the ceremony, attended by over 600 persons; the Amphitheatre was full to its capacity.The troupe then performed in Sohar, Sur and Salalah, which were well attended and appreciated. Inauguration of Islamic Calligraphy Exhibition as part of Festival of India by H.E Hassan bin Mohammed Ali Al Lawati, Adviser to Minister of Heritage & Culture of Oman on 21st November 2016. The exhibits being displayed are from the collection of Rampur Raza Library which will be open for public till 3rd December 2016 at Promenade Garden (level2) Oman Avenues Mall.

 

As a part of the first ever ‘Festival of India in Oman’ a ‘Semi–classical Music Concert’ by Dr. Soma Ghosh and her troupe was organized by Embassy of India, Muscat with support of India’s Ministry of Culture and Oman’s Ministry of Heritage and Culture, on Tuesday, 24 January 2017 at Al-Bustan Palace. The event, which was attended by over 500 persons including Omanis, diplomats and prominent Indians, was graced by the presence of senior Omani Officials including H.E. Dr. Abdullah Nasser Al Harrasi, Chairman of Public Authority for Radio and T.V; H.H. Sayyid Mohammed Salem Ali Al Said, Chief of Statistics and Standards Department; and H.E. Mohsin Khamis Al-Balushi, Advisor to Minister of Commerce & Industry. Dr Soma Ghosh gave an enthralling performance of semi classical music of different forms including Kajri, Ghazals, Thumri, Sufiana songs, and immortal Bollywood film songs. Her troupe, accompanied by a talented dancer, recreated scenes that typify the traditional Indian 'durbars'- the Royal Court Mehfils of Mughals. An Evening with Indian Folk music and Dance from Jammu & Kashmir: A folk dance and music Troupe from State of Jammu and Kashmir of India gave a scintillating performance on Sunday, 12 February 2017, at Al-Bustan Palace, Muscat. The Troupe has also performed in Sohar and Sur and will perform in Salalah on February 14th February 2017. The Troupe presented a rich bouquet of folk dance and Music from different regions of Jammu & Kashmir, including Sufiana music, Rouff Dance, Hafiznagma dance, Bachha nagma Dance, Dogri dance, Bhoomra Dance etc. The performance was attended by over 600 persons, including diplomats and prominent Omanis and Indians. It was graced by the presence of H.E. Mohammed Yousuf Al Zarafi, Undersecretary for Administration and Finance Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and H.E. Amb. Sheikh Hilal Marhoon Salem Al Ma’amari, Chief of West Asia Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sultanate of Oman. FESTIVAL OF INDIA IN OMAN CONCLUDES WITH INDIAN FOOD FESTIVAL AT GRAND HYATT (15-19 MARCH 2017): The much-awaited Indian Food Festival in Oman was inaugurated on 15th March 2017 evening at Grand Hyatt in a ceremony full of Indian instrumental music, classical and folk dance, ghazals and Bollywood songs. His Excellency Salim bin Mohammed bin Said Al Mahrooqi, Under Secretary for Heritage, Ministry of Heritage and Culture of Oman, was the Chief Guest. The Opening ceremony was also attended by HE Nasser Mohammed Khaleefa Al Busaidi, Chief of Protocol, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, HE Sheikh Hilal Marhoon Salem Al Ma’amari, Chief of West Asia Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and HE Saif Mohammed Al Ruzaiqi, Adviser Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Over 300 prominent Omanis, including businesspersons and officials, Ambassadors, members of diplomatic corps, expatriates and members of Indian community were present at the opening ceremony. Events

Inauguration of Indian Calligraphy Exhibition by His Excellency Mr. Abdul Aziz bin Mohammed Al Rowas, Advisor to His Majesty Sultan for Cultural Affairs on 20th March 2017. The exhibition will remain on display till 25th March 2017 at Omani Society for Fine Arts during visiting hours from 9 am to 1.30 pm and 4.30 pm to 8 pm. All are requested to visit.
