The first ever ‘Festival of India in Oman’ is being organized by Embassy of India, Muscat, with support from Ministry of Culture of India and in association with Ministry of Heritage and Culture of the Sultanate of Oman from November 2016 to March 2017. It was launched by H.E Yousuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah, Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs on 15 November at Al-Bustan Palace Auditorium wherein the audience was enthralled by Indian ballet dance performed by ‘Hritaal’ troupe. They had also performed in Sohar, Sur and Salalah. The Embassy had then organized an Indian Calligraphy Exhibition from 21st November to 3rd December 2016 at Oman Avenues Mall, which had attracted thousands of Omani and expatriate visitors. The Calligraphy Exhibition will also be held at some other venues in Muscat and other cities of Oman.

As part of the Festival of India in Oman, on 24 January 2017, the Embassy of India organized a ‘Semi–classical Music Concert’ by Dr. Soma Ghosh and her troupe at Al-Bustan Palace Hotel in Muscat. The event, which was attended by over 500 persons, including Omanis, diplomats and prominent Indians, was graced by the presence of senior Omani Officials including H.E. Dr. Abdullah Nasser Al Harrasi, Chairman of Public Authority for Radio and T.V; H.H. Sayyid Mohammed Salem Ali Al Said, Chief of Statistics and Standards Department; and H.E. Mohsin Khamis Al-Balushi, Advisor to Minister of Commerce & Industry.

Dr. Soma Ghosh gave an enthralling performance of semi classical music of different forms including Kajri, Ghazals, Thumri, Sufiana songs, and immortal Bollywood film songs. Her troupe, accompanied by a talented dancer, recreated scenes that typify the traditional Indian durbars- the Royal Court Mehfils of Mughals. The troupe then performed in Sohar, Sur and Salalah, which were well attended and appreciated.

The Embassy will now be organizing, under the ‘Festival of India in Oman’, an Indian folk dance performance, by a troupe from the state of Jammu & Kashmir, on Friday, 10 February 2017 at Sohar Beach Hotel, Sohar. The troupe will then perform in Muscat on 12 February 2017 at Al-Bustan Palace Hotel, in Sur on 11 February 2017 at King Hall near Indian School, Sur, and on 14 February 2017 at Indian Social Club, Salalah.

The Festival of India in Oman, which is being organized with a view to present to the people of Oman the lesser known facets of India’s rich and diverse culture, will continue to delight Oman in future by an Indian Food Festival at Grand Hyatt Hotel which will be held from 15 to 19 March 2017.
